Step 1: Opening Up the Charger

  • Remove the charger’s front cover after being taken out of the box. There are two covers on the Tesla charger. Six tiny plastic clips around the cover’s borders remain in place even after this screw is removed. Step 2: The Baseplates

  • With the Tesla charger, two baseplates, or installation brackets, are provided. Use the low-profile bracket if your conduit will enter the charger from the bottom or back; if it will enter from the top, use the top entrance bracket. The deeper top entry bracket raises the charger further from the wall, so there is space for both the top entry conduit and the looped cable, which is intended to be wrapped around the charger while not in use.

Step 3: Mount the Charger

  • A suitable site must be chosen before mounting the charger. First, make sure the cord will fit into the car’s charging port. This usually entails putting the charger near the car’s charging port on the garage or parking area wall. In order to hang the rope, Tesla advises mounting the gadget 4 feet off the ground with at least 8 inches of space on all sides.
  • After deciding on an acceptable spot, you must screw the low-profile bracket to the wall using the six mounting holes. Step 5: Select and Pull the Wire

  • You have to thread your steel fish tape through the conduit leading from the sub-panel to the charger to pull the wire. Then drag all four wires through to the sub panel after using electrical tape to tie them to the fish tape. You might want to choose a size larger conduit if your conduit has a lot of bends so the wires can pull more freely.

Step 6: Connections in the Sub Panel

  • Turning the breaker on the main panel that supplies electricity to the sub-panel should be done before performing any electrical work in the sub-panel. You might be unable to switch off the electricity to a primary panel while working on it. A certified electrician will understand how to work properly on a live panel.

Step 7: Connections in the Charger

  • The charger contains connections for both the neutral and two-phase wires. Also, the Tesla charger does not use a separate ground wire because it needs your neutral to be grounded. So just cover the wire with a wire nut and push it out of the way rather than removing it. Make sure the wires are securely fastened after tightening the screws by tugging at them.

Step 9: Closing the Charger

  • Once the wiring is complete, the charger can be closed again. Make sure the ribbon cable is connected to the circuit board inside the cover before you replace the inner cover. The same T20 security Torx screws previously removed are used to secure the inside cover. The outer cover is finally snapped back onto the charger by pushing along its sides. One T10 Torx screw is used to secure this cover at the bottom.
  • When the covers are in place and the charger’s power supply circuit breaker is turned on, the Tesla charger is ready for use. The Tesla charger will undergo a brief boot procedure when powered on. A solid green light will eventually appear through the unit’s front window.
