A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet monitors the current flowing through a circuit and shuts power off almost instantly if it detects current leaking somewhere it shouldn’t, like through a person. It’s one of the more meaningful safety upgrades a property can have in areas where water and electricity are likely to be near each other.

What a GFCI Outlet Actually Does

Unlike a standard outlet, a GFCI outlet has built-in electronics that constantly compare the current going out to the current coming back. Even a small imbalance, the kind that happens when current is leaking through a person to ground, trips the outlet in a fraction of a second, well before it could cause serious harm.

Where GFCI Outlets Are Required

  • Kitchens, especially outlets near sinks and countertops.
  • Bathrooms, at every outlet.
  • Garages and unfinished basements.
  • Outdoor outlets.
  • Areas near pools, spas, and other water features.

If your home predates current code, or work was done before GFCI requirements expanded to a given area, you may have outlets in these locations that were never upgraded.

Why might a GFCI outlet keep tripping? A GFCI that trips repeatedly isn’t necessarily broken, it may be doing exactly what it’s designed to do in response to a genuine ground fault somewhere downstream. It can also fail with age and start tripping on its own without a real fault present. We diagnose which is happening before simply replacing it.

GFCI Outlet Cost

Per our current pricing guide, outlet installation starts from $100. GFCI outlets themselves cost somewhat more than a standard outlet, and pricing can vary based on how many locations need upgrading and whether new wiring is required at each.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where in my home are GFCI outlets actually required?

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoor areas, and anywhere near a pool or spa. Older homes that predate these requirements often need retrofitting in one or more of these areas.

It could be responding correctly to an actual ground fault somewhere on the circuit, or it could be an aging GFCI mechanism tripping on its own. We test to determine which before recommending a fix.

Outlet installation starts from $100 per our current pricing guide, with GFCI units costing somewhat more than standard outlets and the total depending on how many locations are involved.

It’s a common DIY attempt, but incorrect wiring (especially with downstream protection setups) is a frequent source of GFCI outlets that don’t actually protect what they’re supposed to. We recommend having it done and tested properly.
