Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are one of the least expensive, highest-value safety upgrades a property can have, but placement, power source, and age all affect how well they actually work when it matters.

Where Detectors Should Be Placed

Smoke detectors are generally recommended inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home. Carbon monoxide detectors are recommended near sleeping areas and, in homes with gas appliances or an attached garage, near those specific sources. We confirm correct placement for your property’s actual layout and code requirements.

Hardwired vs. Battery-Powered Detectors

Hardwired detectors tie into your home’s electrical system, often with battery backup for power outages, and don’t rely on someone remembering to replace a battery. Battery-only detectors are simpler to install but require more regular owner maintenance. We can install either, depending on your property and preference.

Detector Lifespan and Replacement. Detectors don’t last indefinitely, sensors degrade over time regardless of whether the unit still “works” when tested. If your detectors are original to an older home or you’re not sure of their age, replacement is often overdue rather than premature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should carbon monoxide detectors be placed?

Generally near sleeping areas, and specifically near gas appliances or an attached garage if your home has either. We confirm exact placement based on your home’s layout.

Detector sensors degrade with age even if the unit still tests as functional. If you’re unsure how old your detectors are, especially in an older home, replacement is a reasonable precaution.

Smoke detector installation and repair both start from $80 per our current pricing guide.
