Expanded AFCI Protection Requirements Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) are now mandatory for all living spaces inside the home. While previously restricted to specific areas, the 2026 code requires these breakers for all 120-volt, 15- and 20-amp branch circuits supplying:
- Bedrooms and hallways
- Living rooms and family rooms
- Kitchens and laundry rooms
These devices are essential because they detect dangerous wiring arcs that can overheat and cause electrical fires. For older homes, meeting these new standards often necessitates an Electric Panel Upgrade to accommodate the additional AFCI breakers.
